A NEV is any vehicle that can be plugged in to charge: battery electric vehicles (EVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and range-extended electric vehicles (REEVs). The term comes from Pakistan’s New Energy Vehicle Policy 2025–30, which targets 30% of new vehicle sales being NEVs by 2030. Ordinary “self-charging” hybrids (HEVs) are not NEVs, because they cannot be plugged in, and they do not qualify for NEV tax incentives.
An EV runs only on a battery that you charge by plugging in. A PHEV (plug-in hybrid) has both a petrol engine and a plug-in battery, typically giving 50–150 km of electric range before the engine takes over. A REEV (range-extended EV) always drives on its electric motor, with a small petrol engine that works only as a generator to top up the battery. A regular hybrid (HEV) cannot be plugged in at all; its small battery charges from the engine and braking. In Pakistan, only the plug-in types count as NEVs for tax purposes.

BYD’s largest-ever shipment of over 2,000 vehicles arrived at Karachi Port in July 2026, local assembly of EVs is expected to begin by the end of 2026, and brands like BYD, Haval, Changan, MG and Deepal keep adding plug-in models. Electric two- and three-wheelers are adopting even faster than cars.
Brand-new electric cars in Pakistan start at roughly PKR 70–90 lakh for compact electric SUVs and run past PKR 2 crore for premium models, while used imported EVs can cost significantly less. Prices move often with the rupee, freight and policy changes, so treat any quoted figure as indicative and confirm with the dealer before you buy.
See current prices for every model in the catalog →As of FY2026–27, EVs are subject to a reduced 1% sales tax on import and sale, a key incentive the government has extended for another year, and the NEV policy extends similar treatment to PHEVs and REEVs while regular hybrids pay more. Fully imported (CBU) vehicles still attract customs duty, and registration and token tax concessions for EVs vary by province. Tax rules change with every Finance Act, so check the latest rates before committing.
Yes, usually by a wide margin. With petrol above Rs 300 a litre and home charging billed at domestic electricity tariffs, an EV’s per-kilometre energy cost typically works out to a third to a fifth of a comparable petrol car’s, and close to zero if you charge from rooftop solar. Maintenance is cheaper too: no oil changes, fewer moving parts and less brake wear. Public DC fast charging costs more than charging at home.

Any standard 220V socket can charge an EV: a regular 3-pin socket sustains about 2–2.5 kW, adding roughly 10–15 km of range per hour, which is enough to refill a typical daily commute overnight. A dedicated home AC charger (7–11 kW) will fully charge most EVs overnight. Use a good-quality socket on its own breaker and have an electrician check the circuit — avoid extension leads.
Public chargers are concentrated in the big cities — Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and Rawalpindi, with growing coverage in cities like Multan, Faisalabad and Peshawar — plus DC fast chargers at motorway service areas on the M-1, M-2 and M-3. A 7 kW home AC charger takes roughly 6–10 hours for a full charge, and a regular 3-pin socket is an overnight-plus trickle best used for daily top-ups rather than full charges. Charging slows above 80% by design, so on road trips it is faster to charge to 80% and drive on.
Yes. Most owners charge overnight at home, when load shedding is least disruptive, and a car parked 10–12 hours only needs a few of those hours live to cover daily running. Rooftop solar with storage makes charging largely independent of the grid, and many commercial DC stations run on dedicated feeders or backup. For long trips, check a station’s recent driver check-ins before relying on it.

How neighbourhood charging works and staying safe →Modern EV batteries handle Pakistani summers well because they are liquid-cooled, and the LFP chemistry used in many popular models (including most BYDs) is particularly heat-tolerant. Manufacturers typically warranty the battery for around 8 years or 150,000–160,000 km. Heat plus constant DC fast charging does age any battery faster, so park in shade when you can, and avoid sitting at 100% charge every day.
Yes. Lahore to Islamabad on the M-2 is around 375 km, within a single charge for many newer EVs and an easy one-stop trip for the rest, using the DC fast chargers at motorway service areas. Longer or less-travelled routes need more planning because coverage off the main motorways is still sparse — check charger status before setting out rather than assuming a pin on a map is live.
Check your route before you go →Pakistan’s used EV market is still young, so resale values are less predictable than for established petrol cars — early models with small batteries depreciated sharply, while mainstream, well-supported models are holding value better as demand grows. Battery health, remaining warranty and the brand’s local after-sales presence matter more to resale than mileage alone.
